Sayaxché
Southwest of Flores, on a bend in the Río Pasión, the easy-going frontier town of SAYAXCHÉ makes an ideal base for exploring the surrounding forest and its huge collection of archeological remains. The town is the supply centre for a vast surrounding area that is being steadily cleared and colonized. The complex network of rivers and swamps that cuts through the forested wilderness here has been an important trade route since Maya times, and there are several interesting ruins in the area. Upstream is Ceibal , a small but beautiful site in a wonderful jungle setting; to the south is Lago de Petexbatún , on the shores of which are the small ruins of Dos Pilas and Aguateca . Both sites offer great opportunities to wander in the forest and watch the wildlife.
